Urine/Spray Remover
If you've ever have a cat not use their litter box (or an intact male cat "mark" his territory) you know the smell of cat urine can be difficult to remove completely. Plus, with a cats ability to smell being 14 times stronger than a humans, they're going to return to that spot. It's even worse if you have more than one kitty, and it's the non-dominant one who had the accident.
(Note: Sudden stopping of using a litter box may be due a to a bullying situation and the kitty is trying to tell you they're super stressed or it's due to a medical issue. Either way, your kitty should be examined by a licensed veterinarian right away)
Once you've determined the issue causing the incidents, and you're ready to thoroughly clean the area, as to not draw any back to "the scene," what should you use?
There are LOTS of products on the market. Some work well. Some, not so much. Here's a great place to start, and it might actually be the only thing you'll need.
You'll need three things (four, if you count the water) a generic 20 ounce spray bottle, Citrus Dawn dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide.
When using on carpets or fabrics, be careful to run a test spot as the peroxide can potentially bleach the area.
• Fill the spray bottle half way with water
• Carefully mix 3 tablespoons of dish soap (again, Citrus Dawn works best),
• If the contents of the bottle is foamy, allow it to rest until it's not.
• Now, carefully fill the remainder of the bottle with hydrogen peroxide, and remember to leave room in the bottle for the spayer mechanism
• Gereously spray more than the area in question and allow it set for 2 to 5 minutes
• It should foam on its own
• Wipe it down or use a quality rug cleaner.
Best practice: Repeat using a scrub brush and really get in all the cracks and crevices. Again, allow it set for 2 to 5 minutes. Then wipe it down or use a rug cleaner one last time.
WARNING: Only use cleaning agents in a well ventilated room. Even though it may not bother you, you can potentially (and easily) poison your fur-babies.
